Case Study: Stability Book Update for ML Dredging’s Big Ron

BYD-Naval Architects was engaged by ML Dredging, a UK-based marine services company, to carry out a stability book update for their multi-role workboat, Big Ron. The project involved conducting an inclining experiment and updating the vessel’s stability documentation to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and safe operational performance.

Challenges and Objectives:

  • Assessing the vessel’s stability characteristics following operational changes.
  • Conducting an accurate inclining experiment to gather updated weight distribution data.
  • Ensuring the stability booklet met classification and regulatory standards for intact and damage stability.

BYD-Naval Architects aimed to:

  • Provide ML Dredging with a fully updated stability assessment for Big Ron.
  • Deliver a comprehensive stability booklet that supports safe vessel operations.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant UK maritime regulations and industry best practices.

Approach and Execution

The project commenced with a detailed assessment of the vessels form and stability characteristics to determine Big Ron’s current stability parameters. The collected data was analyzed to update the vessel’s stability calculations, including intact and damage stability conditions. The final stability booklet was developed in accordance with applicable Maritime Coast Guard Agency MCA safety standards.

Outcome and Impact

The updated stability booklet provided ML Dredging with essential documentation for regulatory approval and operational safety. This project reinforced BYD-Naval Architects’ expertise in vessel stability analysis and compliance, supporting the safe and efficient operation of commercial workboats.
