Case Study: Rudder Shaft and Steering System Re-Engineering for City of Toronto Ferry

BYD-Naval Architects was contracted by the City of Toronto to carry out laser scanning and re-engineering of the rudder shaft arrangement and steering system on one of the city ferries while in Toronto Drydock. The project aimed to enhance the vessel’s steering performance by developing a precise and efficient replacement for the existing system.

Challenges and Objectives:

  • Accurately capturing the existing rudder arrangement, shaft and steering compartments for re-engineering.
  • Designing a new mounting arrangement that could be manufactured offsite for seamless installation.
  • Carrying out engineering calculations to select an appropriate equipment to replace existing components and re machining the rudder shaft.
  • Provide technical support during installation.

BYD-Naval Architects aimed to:

  • Utilize laser scanning technology to create an accurate digital representation of the existing structure.
  • Develop precise technical data to facilitate CNC cutting and offsite preparation of the new mounting arrangement and machining of the rudder shaft.
  • Conduct mechanical engineering analysis to determine the best bearing solution for optimal performance and longevity.

Approach and Execution

The project commenced with high-resolution laser scanning of the exterior and interior steering compartments. The collected data was used to develop 3D models, allowing for precise engineering of the new rudder shaft arrangement. CNC-cut components were fabricated and assembled prior to installation on the vessel in drydock. A thorough mechanical analysis was performed to identify and integrate a suitable bearing solution.

Outcome and Impact

The re-engineered rudder shaft and steering system enhanced the ferry’s maneuverability and operational reliability. The use of laser scanning and offsite fabrication minimized the design and construction phase and improved installation efficiency. This project demonstrated BYD-Naval Architects’ capability in leveraging advanced technology to optimize vessel maintenance and upgrades.
