Jack-Up Barge Time Saver II

Jack-Up Barge Time Saver II

Case Study: Drill Well Structure Design for Jack-Up Barge Time Saver II

BYD-Naval Architects was contracted to design and analyze a new drill well structure for the jack-up barge Time Saver II. This modification was required to accommodate a new piece of drilling equipment while ensuring the barge’s structural integrity and operational safety. The project involved structural surveys, finite element analysis (FEA), and direct calculations for longitudinal and transverse bending and shear assessments.

Challenges and Objectives:

  • Assessing and confirming the barge’s existing structural layout and scantlings capacity to support the new drill well structure and equipment.
  • Ensuring safety by compliance with engineering safety standards.
  • Conducting detailed structural analysis to validate the modifications.

BYD-Naval Architects aimed to:

  • Perform an onboard structural survey to assess existing conditions and identify modification requirements.
  • Utilize FEA to analyze local structural responses to the new equipment loads.
  • Conduct direct calculations to check longitudinal and transverse bending stresses, ensuring the barge remained within allowable limits.

Approach and Execution

The project commenced with an onboard survey to capture the barge’s structural layout. Advanced FEA modeling was used to simulate stress distribution under different loading conditions. The team then performed direct calculations to verify overall bending strength, ensuring that the new drill well structure could be integrated and equipment loads were within allowable parameters.

Outcome and Impact

The project successfully provided Time Saver II with a reinforced and optimized drill well structure, allowing for safe and efficient equipment operation. This case highlights BYD-Naval Architects’ expertise in structural analysis and modification for offshore marine assets, demonstrating our capability to support vessel modifications and upgrades across the industry.
